Smart helmets have been around for a few years, but most haven’t managed to convince serious riders. Too heavy, too complex, not durable enough. That’s starting to change.

Virginia Tech’s latest safety results revealed something few expected: both UNIT 1 helmets, AURA and NEON, are the first ever Smart Helmets to get a 5-star rating. It’s the kind of data that forces a second look at what “Smart” can actually mean.

Here are four common myths about smart helmets, and what the latest data proves wrong.

1

Smart Helmets Aren’t as Safe as Traditional Ones

Many riders assume added electronics compromise impact protection. Virginia Tech’s independent tests show otherwise. Both UNIT 1 helmets scored within the top 30 for concussion risk reduction, outperforming hundreds of traditional and smart helmets alike.

2

Putting A Light On A Helmet Makes It Smart.

A light alone doesn’t make a helmet smart. True smart lighting has a purpose; it doesn’t just make you visible, it makes you predictable. In NEON and AURA, the lights are part of a complete safety system: turn signals that show your next move, brake lights that react instantly, and smart visibility you can control through the UNIT 1 Remote and App.

Safety Is Just About

The Crash

True protection starts long before impact. The goal isn’t only to protect you when something goes wrong, but to help prevent it from happening in the first place. UNIT 1’s concept of Active Safety adds three continuous layers: visibility through high-mounted lights and turn signals that make riders predictable, impact protection with Mips® and e-bike certification, and post-impact support via Crash Alert, which automatically calls for help after a fall.

4

Smart Helmets Are Ugly

For years, smart helmets looked bulky and overdesigned, trading style for functionality. UNIT 1 took a different path. With AURA and NEON, all the technology lives inside a clean, minimalist shell.

Smart doesn’t have to mean complicated or fragile. The numbers speak for themselves: two 5-star ratings, independent validation, and a new definition of what a helmet can be. Smart meets safety, finally.
